PHILOSOPHY
VISION & MISSION
Advancing Science, Empowering People
In The Dunn Lab, we are dedicated to advancing mental health research by pioneering breakthroughs in developmental and translational epidemiology while fostering a collaborative, inclusive environment that values mentorship and teamwork as key drivers of success. Our mission is to reduce the burden of mental illness and promote brain health across the lifespan, with an emphasis on understanding the social and biological underpinnings of depression and anxiety among vulnerable populations including women, children, adolescents, racial/ethnic minorities and people of low socioeconomic status.
Our research spans a wide range of biological and social factors, including genetic variation, epigenetic mechanisms, and early-life environmental stressors. We believe that interdisciplinary collaboration—drawing from genetics, neuroscience, anthropology, pediatrics, and other fields—leads to breakthrough discoveries. We also value and prioritize mentorship and personal development, working closely with each lab member to ensure they thrive both scientifically and professionally. Our goal is not only to advance scientific knowledge but also to empower the next generation of leaders in mental health research.
APPROACH TO SCIENTIFIC DISCOVERY
Curiosity-Driven Research for Real-World Impact
Philosophy of Inquiry
In The Dunn Lab, scientific discovery is driven by curiosity and perseverance. We believe that asking bold questions and confronting challenges head-on is essential to advancing knowledge. Our research thrives on a problem-solving mindset, where perseverance through complexity leads to groundbreaking discoveries. Every challenge is seen as an opportunity to innovate. Lab members are encouraged to push the boundaries of their thinking as they explore new research avenues.
Collaborative Innovation
Our work is built upon collaboration across disciplines. We think the best science happens when diverse perspectives come together. Our team-science approach encourages researchers to engage with colleagues across genetics, anthropology, sociology, neuroscience, dentistry, and other fields. By combining these varied insights, we can develop more comprehensive solutions to complex questions in mental health research.
From Knowledge to Action
Our commitment to scientific inquiry doesn’t stop with discovery—we are focused on translating knowledge into real-world impact. Whether it's identifying early biological markers of risk or developing interventions that build resilience, we approach science with the intent to improve lives and prevent suffering from mental illness. This commitment to knowledge translation ensures that we focus on research that will inform the creation of new interventions, policies, and future approaches to mental health care.
LAB CULTURE
A Collaborative Environment Built on Growth & Support
Collaboration & Inclusivity
Mentorship & Personal Growth
Peer Mentorship & Team Support
Communication & Accessibility
Our lab promotes peer-to-peer mentorship, creating a collaborative space where lab members learn from each other. This supportive dynamic enhances both personal growth and scientific progress as lab members provide feedback, share expertise, and work together on joint projects.
Open communication is key to our lab’s success. Weekly lab meetings and timely communication ensure that lab members are connected, with opportunities to seek advice and contribute ideas at any time. This transparent approach fosters trust and ensures that lab members feel supported in their research and career development.
Work-Life Balance
We recognize that maintaining a healthy work-life balance is crucial for sustained success. The Dunn Lab supports flexibility and encourages members to manage their time in a way that balances personal well-being with the demands of research. By promoting well-roundedness, we ensure lab members can perform at their best, both inside and outside the lab.
Mentorship is integral to our lab culture. Dr. Dunn provides hands-on guidance, tailoring mentorship to each lab member’s personal and professional goals. Regular one-on-one meetings are held to ensure members receive the support and feedback they need to thrive. Lab members are encouraged to take on leadership roles, present at conferences, and push beyond their comfort zones to develop as independent, empowered scientists who can tackle 21st century problems.
We think good science is built on a foundation of diverse and inclusive teams. We foster an environment where different thinking and approaches drive meaningful advances in mental health research, and inclusive collaboration is at the core of our day-to-day work. By valuing every perspective, we ensure that innovation thrives and that our research reflects the complexity of the challenges we aim to address.
